Advice for dealing with grief? Make friends with it if you can. Also the importance of connection in life and life in those difficult times.

Euan and I have been friends for a few years and bonded over shared experiences of loss many times at the start of our friendship. The last chapter in the book and last podcast episode of the upcoming series is ‘Loss of a Partner.’ Yep, Theo and I nearly didn’t make it, in fact at one point we didn’t think we would get back together. When you have been in a relationship for almost 20 years, it’s really tough to navigate.

Spoiler alert! We’re in a good place now, and we’ve been unapologetically open by talking about our experiences, that in itself has been very healing.

I have reflected on this a lot in the last couple of years, but I now understand creativity is as essential to me as exercise, food and drink, sleep and everything else we rely on to function well in the world. I’m so grateful for my ability to create at the most difficult time of my life.

Creativity has improved my mental wellbeing vastly in the last few years. It’s good for the soul, and for me, vital. You don’t need to write a book, create a play, or be the best sketching artist to create - it can be as simple as baking a cake, rearranging or reorganising a room, or paint by numbers if that is of interest. Whatever it is, just have a go! It can really help.

I’m home alone this weekend and something I often do when I’m alone is put on @tinaturner - Tina has been my security and comfort blanket since I was 6 years old. This may be an odd thing to get your head around, but for me she was an escape, and comfort when I need it, and still is to this day.

Tina Turner came to my home town of Ipswich on the 25th July 1990, the day before my 6th birthday. I remember there being such a buzz around this happening and it was often talked about because my mum worked for Ipswich Town Football Club. My dad got a ticket, other family members did too, and I can vividly remember people parking their cars in our street, which was common when a football match was on, and heading to the stadium to see Tina.

We had a hill near my friend’s house and I sat on there with her and my brother, trying to listen out for the music, but I don’t remember whether we heard anything. What i do remember is I was wearing a blue stripped t- shirt. I think these may be some of my earliest memories.

The next day, my birthday, I went to the football stadium with my friend and brother to see the stage being pulled apart, but think it was done, or I was looking in the wrong place? I don’t know. That evening, there was footage of the concert on the TV/ news. I remember my dad watching it, and I remember seeing this woman on the big crane like thing singing above these people… something I now know very well as ‘The Claw’. - a few months later the same concert but performed in Barcelona was on Sky TV and my dad played it to me. I haven’t stopped watching it since.

I have written about this incredible gift my dad gave to me all those years ago in my book, and i am so pleased to have written about how much this meant and continues to mean to me.

I’ve been on Google tonight and found these pictures, from the actual concert in Ipswich nearly 35 years ago. And the song, my favourite moment of the whole show.

Tina Turner, my hero. ❤️

I had a lovely stroll along the seafront today, and the cloud over the sun made the pier, the sky, and the sea look really moody. I looked at the pier, which was opened in 1899, and thought about how many people had walked on it. Families, friends, lovers. So much history in one place, and yet today it was so quiet, and kind of looked its 126 years.

I am fascinated by old buildings, but especially empty and derelict buildings, and the history and memories they hold. People that walked the halls, the conversations had, or incredible milestones celebrated, are just memories in a building, and when’s it’s pulled down, they go with the rubble.

I took a few snaps of the restoration work on Madeira Drive, which is really exciting, and then I walked to the Royal Albion Hotel, which is in the process of being torn down - there is something eerie about seeing the inside of a building where doorframes remain, but floors have been removed. Coincidentally, I then visited @brighton_museums to see the @queerthepierbtn exhibition, and in the first display was a letter sent from that very hotel to Ivor Novello circa 1920. A little history from that building remains.

In the summer of 2021, I visited Brighton with Theo and my parents before we moved here. I’m pleased I have a picture of that day, and to have made a memory with my dad in the place we now call home, and I guess for it to be a moment in time, just like all those others that have been created over the years on the pier and around the city. ❤️

I cannot tell you how much these words meant to me… they have stuck with me ever since and the way I am looking at my creativity has changed. Creatives work hard, generally this will be a side hustle for many, and it involves hard work, commitment, and drive.

I wonder how many of us go through life thinking we are lucky when things are going well because of our social class, background, and the things we are taught as we grow up? This is certainly a narrative that has played out in my life, and now Juno has ‘pulled aging rank’ and told me how it is, I cannot stop thinking about it. Thank Juno for making me think. ❤️

I was interviewed on Friday for @queeriamthepodcast by the incredible @damiankerlin and I loved it.

I wanted to feature on the season and talk about why I wrote #doyoubelieveinlifeafterloss , the process, and the experience for me personally too. Damien and I have been following each other’s careers and rooting for each other over the last couple of years, and I knew he was perfect to take the driving seat and host the episode. Big thank you Damien!

As you will see from this clip, I was very comfortable talking about my experiences and feelings with him. I’ve realised that Sometimes we have to be the bad guy, and it’s freeing to not people please - we only get one shot, so I intend to make it count.

I first became aware of Nathaniel after watching #itsasin back in 2021. Shortly after, I read about his play First Time, and bought the book, which I really enjoyed. It’s sort of full circle that a few years later, I’ve written and book and this lovely human is telling his story as part of this project - Loss of Identity.

The sun was so beautiful today, that I decided to head back out to watch it set on the beach and had the gorgeous company of my darling friend, Euan.

After a few years of being in Brighton, meeting different people, forming and drifting from friendships, there is a core group of us now who share something really special and I am so grateful to all of them. They know who they are.

Euan will always be special to me, and he has been a constant over the last few years. He has been there through good times, funny times, and really sad times. He’s been there with an ear if I’ve needed it, a hug, and we never fail to laugh about something … often me 😜 He is a beautiful soul.

A deep post but I’m grateful. I love my chosen family and it’s important to speak about how we truly feel. ❤️

I have posted about this book on my stories, but FINALLY got round to finishing it last night before bed. This is a must read!

@sethinsua has written a debut book that sees the Calvert family taken on a rollercoaster of events and emotions throughout. He has managed to showcase a diverse group of characters, all adding to the richness of the story, which ultimately illustrates the meaning of empathy, love, and acceptance. It really was a great read.

I cannot recommend enough! ❤️

This interview in the book will always be really special to me. When I had the idea for the book, I talked Euan about it and said I needed to submit some work for my proposal to @jkpbooks and thought an interview would be useful as part of this. Euan gave up his time, came to my flat where we shared a few bottles of wine, pressed record on my phone and talked.

It was beautiful, emotional, heartbreaking, and inspiring, and I feel very honoured Euan trusted me with including his story as part of the book.

The rest is history, because a book deal was offered and it will be available in a few months ❤️

It’s a new week, which means there are new reels!!

Season 5 of #queeriamthepodcast is coming, and so is my debut book, in just under 3 months! 📚❤️

Over the coming weeks, I’m going to be posting clips from the podcast recordings, and quotes from the incredible contributors of the book.

The podcast is a teaser! An opportunity for me to have a chat with the contributors, about their involvement in the book, but you’ll need to read the book to know more about their personal experience of loss.

As part of the book, Zack talks about how having OCD has affected his relationships with partners, and how he experienced a ‘Loss of Intimacy’. Zack is doing some incredible work to break the stigma and raise awareness around OCD, and I am really proud that he is part of this project.

The podcast starts on Wednesday 23rd April, and the book is released Wednesday 21st May. The links are in my bio! ❤️
